Motorcycle season is upon us and it is a good time for drivers to remind themselves of how they can do their part to help keep motorcycle riders safe. It is also a good time to ensure that motorcycle riders who have been injured by a negligent driver know how personal injury legal protections may be able to help compensate them for their damages.

Tips to help drivers safely share the road with motorcycles

Drivers can do their part by following several safety tips, including always allowing a motorcycle the complete lane of traffic to drive in. Drivers should never try to share a lane with a motorcycle just because they are smaller.

Because motorcycles are smaller and harder to see, drivers should also double-check for them while on the road. This is especially true when making left turns, at intersections and when pulling out into traffic.

Drivers should continually be scanning the roadway for motorcycles. Failing to yield the right of way is the most common driver error in crashes that involve motorcycles and another vehicle. Another cause can be following a motorcycle too close. Motorcycles need more time to adjust to roadway and other changes but also may need to adjust more quickly than other types of vehicles because motorcycles can be more sensitive to those changes. For that reason, drivers should increase their following distance when safely traveling behind a motorcycle.

Unfortunately, drivers do not always follow these safety tips which can lead to motorcycle accidents. If you have been injured by a negligent driver in a motorcycle accident, a personal injury claim for damages may be able to help with the recovery of compensation for your damages.
